A Legacy 70 Years in the Making

Since its grand opening in 1955, Uptown Plaza has been a cherished landmark in the heart of Phoenix. Originally designed by visionary architect, Del Webb, this mid-century modern gem was one of the first shopping centers in the city, offering residents a new way to shop, dine, and connect. 

"Uptown Plaza Opens Wonderful New World Of Shopping Pleasure In Arizona’s Capital City” trumpeted the headlines back in 1955, noting the “record-breaking flow of cars and customers” drawn to this “modern brick, masonry and steel construction” with innovative features such as “the opportunity to park the family car free of care or cost… and walk a galaxy of new and shining stores." The plaza was illuminated by neon signs until 11pm each night, and what truly set it apart was its vibrant and eclectic mix of tenants, including the swanky Navarre’s restaurant, Helsing’s Coffee Shop, Jerand’s of Arizona fine fashions, Bostrom’s department store, the national grocery store Piggly Wiggly, and more!

Over the decades, Uptown Plaza has seen Phoenix grow and transform, always remaining a steadfast symbol of innovation and community. As we celebrate 70 incredible years, we honor its legacy as a place where history meets modern-day charm, creating a timeless experience for all.

Reviving an Icon

With the addition of The Henry in Spring 2025, Uptown Plaza’s most storied corner at Camelback and Central entered a new era reflecting its legacy as both a historic icon and a modern destination.

Once home to the beloved Helsing’s Coffee Shop, this corner has always been a community landmark, and The Henry now carries that legacy forward as a stylish all-day café and gathering place. Its arrival not only honors the Plaza’s historic past, but also represents the thoughtful evolution of tenants that keeps Uptown as relevant and dynamic as ever.

The Plaza's  intentional evolution has kept the Plaza as relevant today as it was in 1955, masterfully curating a blend of beloved local businesses with nationally recognized concepts, and remains a destination to gather, dine, and connect.

Celebrate 70 Years of Uptown: A Nostalgic Night to Remember

Join us on Saturday, September 27, from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM as we celebrate seven decades of Uptown Plaza with a lively evening full of music, memories, and mid-century magic. This celebration welcomes residents and visitors alike to step back in time and celebrate seven decades of neighborhood connection, culture, and commerce in the heart of Uptown Phoenix, honoring the legacy of Uptown while looking ahead to the future.

Event Highlights Include:

The first 250 guests to check in at the 70th Anniversary Welcome Booth will receive a 70th Anniversary pin, unlocking “1955 pricing” specials across the Plaza, including

- Vintage-Inspired Deals from Shake Shack, Dynamite Beer Co, and Free scoops from Salt & Straw (ahead of their Fall 2025 opening), while supplies last
- Live Rockabilly Music by local band The Joeys
- Community Yoga in the Courtyard at 5:00 PM, led by Sweatshop on Central
- Vintage Volkswagen Photo Booth, retro games, themed décor, and 1950s photo ops
- Limited-Edition 70th Anniversary Merchandise + Giveaways
